The government is actively promoting the use of nano fertilizers as part of its strategy to enhance agricultural productivity, improve resource efficiency, and ensure sustainable farming practices. Nano fertilizers, such as nano-urea, are innovative products that deliver nutrients in ultra-small particles, increasing nutrient uptake by plants and minimizing losses through leaching, runoff, or volatilization. Unlike conventional fertilizers, which are often overused and lead to environmental degradation, nano fertilizers offer a more efficient and targeted approach to nutrient delivery, significantly improving crop yields while reducing input costs for farmers.

To facilitate the adoption of nano fertilizers, the government has launched awareness campaigns, training programs, and field demonstrations to educate farmers about their benefits and application methods. Leading public sector organizations, like Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative (IFFCO), have pioneered the production and distribution of nano-urea, positioning it as a game-changer in modern agriculture. Research studies have shown that nano fertilizers can reduce the dependency on traditional urea by up to 50%, while maintaining or even improving crop yields. This not only lowers fertilizer consumption but also reduces the burden of fertilizer subsidies on the exchequer.

In addition to improving crop productivity, the use of nano fertilizers addresses key environmental concerns by reducing soil and water pollution caused by the excessive application of chemical fertilizers. Nano fertilizers also contribute to climate-smart agriculture by lowering greenhouse gas emissions associated with nitrogen-based fertilizers, supporting India’s commitments toward sustainable development and climate change mitigation goals.

The government is encouraging collaborations between research institutions, fertilizer companies, and farmers to accelerate the development and distribution of nano fertilizers across the country. Policies promoting the widespread adoption of these innovative fertilizers are also in line with the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India), ensuring reduced import dependency and fostering domestic innovation. By leveraging nano fertilizers, the government aims to revolutionize nutrient management in Indian agriculture, improve soil health, increase farmer incomes, and secure long-term food security for the nation.
