The Tamil Nadu government has announced the establishment of modern rice mills in four key districts to tackle the persistent issue of paddy spoilage and improve rice processing efficiency. These mills, equipped with state-of-the-art technology, aim to reduce post-harvest losses, ensure better-quality rice production, and support the state’s vast agricultural sector. The selected districts—known for their significant paddy cultivation—will serve as hubs for processing and value addition, benefiting both farmers and consumers.

The modern mills will feature automated processing systems, including advanced drying, dehusking, polishing, and grading equipment, to handle large volumes of paddy while minimizing spoilage caused by delays, improper storage, or traditional methods. The integration of silo-based storage and climate-controlled facilities will further help preserve the quality of harvested paddy, ensuring longer shelf life and improved yields.

This initiative also aligns with Tamil Nadu’s broader strategy to support farmers through better procurement mechanisms and fair pricing, as well as enhancing the supply chain to meet domestic and export market demands. By upgrading rice milling infrastructure, the government aims to ensure minimal wastage, improve food security, and increase the income of paddy farmers. Additionally, these modern mills will create employment opportunities in rural areas, contributing to local economic growth.

The establishment of these mills underscores the state’s commitment to adopting modern agricultural practices and strengthening Tamil Nadu’s position as a leading rice-producing state in India. With these advancements, the government hopes to create a more resilient, efficient, and sustainable paddy processing ecosystem.
